Luca Messenger-Jones

Founder and Managing Director

Luca is the Founder and Managing Director of Surface News. Whilst studying an MA in International Business at The University of Edinburgh Luca's passion for a positive and more sustainable future was defined. Luca's academic research on B-Corp principles, business psychology and international trade has led him to create Surface News. With the ultimate goal for Surface News to one day become its own ESG Consultancy, Luca hopes to inspire, educate and mobilise students to drive their own change towards a better future. Originally from the Lake District, Luca is a student-athlete at Edinburgh who can be found running up and down Arthur's Seat or laps of the track. Luca has a love for travel and most recently toured Europe by train.

Strategic Director

As an International Business student with strong ambitions to work in globally operating businesses, Ella is keen to help bridge the gap between ESG and unfiltered news. With the target of guiding and streamlining Surface News’ Strategic journey, find Ella devising plans over a cappuccino, in one of Edinburgh’s vast coffee shops- as she merges her love for business, sustainability and all things coffee! Ella helps steer Surface News from a strategic perspective, conducting invaluable analyses which ensures the business adapts to an ever-evolving environment. With a profound market knowledge Ella guides the business onto a trajectory fit for growth and expansion.

Joanna Bowman

Content Director

As Content Director at Surface News, Joanna manages and directs our Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok. Joanna brings together each month's publication into an easy-to-read, and engaging package for our followers. Currently studying French and Business, Joanna enjoys deepening her understanding of different cultures, languages and business environments. In 2020, Joanna started a small business on Instagram, selling handmade clothing, mostly out of second-hand materials. She thrives off creating something new out of something old and has a passion for second-hand fashion. This led to her interest in ESG, and the exciting opportunities it presents to improve and criticise the way in which our world and businesses operate.

Lena Richardson

Communications Director

Lena is currently in her second year as a Spanish and Business student at the University of Edinburgh, with a passion for marketing and sustainability. As Communications Director at Surface News, Lena is responsible for our monthly Newsletter and manages our outreaching and onboarding. Before university, Lena worked in Educational Marketing and now works as the Social Media and Publicity Secretary for the University’s lacrosse club, allowing Lena to merge her passions for creativity and sports. Lena's love for languages, cross-cultural communication, and leadership brings a wealth of skills to Surface News.
